This Black IPA presents a striking juxtaposition of deep roasted malts and vibrant, modern hop character. The foundation is built on debittered dark grains that offer smooth hints of cocoa and toast without any acridity. This darkness serves as a backdrop for a layered hop profile where Citra and Centennial provide classic notes of grapefruit zest and resinous pine. Distinctive lime and tropical fruit nuances from Motueka emerge in the mid-palate, creating a sensory effect described as citrus smoke when combined with the light roast. The beer finishes remarkably dry, balancing its shadowy appearance with the bright, bitter refreshment of an American IPA.

Appearance. Opaque black (35-40 SRM) with deep ruby highlights when held to the light. It features a thick, persistent light tan head with excellent lacing and a creamy texture.

Aroma. High hop intensity featuring lime zest, grapefruit, and floral pine. The malt character is moderate, characterized by dark chocolate and lightly toasted bread. Clean fermentation profile with no significant esters.

Taste. Initial impression is hop-forward with citrus and tropical fruit flavors. Bitterness is medium-high but smooth. Malt flavors provide a supportive role with clean chocolate and toasted notes, avoiding burnt or ashy qualities. The finish is dry and crisp with a lingering resinous and slightly roasty aftertaste.

Mouthfeel. Medium-bodied and smooth with moderate carbonation. A light, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present at 6.6% ABV. Low astringency despite the dark grain bill.
