Frontaal Brewing Co. Nine To Five reimagines the robust American Barleywine as a decadent, coffee-infused experience. This 11% powerhouse opens with a bold aromatic profile of freshly roasted coffee beans and creamy vanilla, evoking a Caramel Macchiato. The palate is defined by a massive, chewy body bolstered by lactose, which smooths out the aggressive bitterness typical of the style. Rich layers of caramel and toasted bread from the malt base mingle with resinous American hop notes, providing a structured counterpoint to the silky sweetness. A deep, integrated alcohol warmth persists through a lingering, espresso-tinted finish that balances indulgent sweetness with hop-driven depth.

Appearance. Medium copper to light brown with deep ruby highlights (SRM 16-18). Forms a dense, tan, moderately-low head with decent lacing; retention is brief due to high alcohol and coffee oils. Brilliant clarity when held to the light.

Aroma. High intensity. Dominant freshly roasted coffee and sweet cream/lactose scents. Strong caramel and toasty malt richness underlies the coffee. Moderate resinous and citrusy hop notes are present but secondary to the infusion. Low fruity esters and a noticeable, clean alcohol warmth.

Taste. Initial impression is of sweet espresso and caramel. Deeply malty with flavors of toasted bread and light burnt sugar. Moderately strong hop bitterness is present but softened significantly by the velvety lactose sweetness. Moderate resinous hop flavor. The finish is long and warming with a lingering coffee bean bitterness and a smooth, creamy aftertaste that balances the malt weight.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied, chewy, and luscious. High viscosity enhanced by the addition of lactose. Moderate to low carbonation. Significant alcohol warmth is smooth and well-integrated, providing a cozy sensation without harshness. Highly creamy and velvety texture.
