Retrowave is a powerful Double IPA that showcases the signature hop-forward intensity of FrauGruber. The sensory experience is dominated by an aggressive yet sophisticated hop profile featuring Centennial, Amarillo, and Citra. Expect a vibrant bouquet of grapefruit zest, resinous pine, and tropical mango, all tied to the specific oils of these three varieties. The palate is defined by a clean, lean malt structure that provides just enough support for a firm, assertive bitterness. At 8.5% ABV, it offers a smooth, integrated warmth while maintaining a surprisingly dry and refreshing finish, making it a highly drinkable example of the style.
Appearance. Gold to light orange-copper (7-9 SRM). Pours with a moderate-sized, persistent, off-white head that leaves consistent lacing. Clarity is good to brilliant, though a very slight chill haze is acceptable.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring prominent citrus (grapefruit and orange) from the Citra and Amarillo, complemented by the floral and piney notes of Centennial. A supportive, neutral, and grainy malt character sits in the background with a very clean fermentation profile.
Taste. Strong and complex hop flavors of citrus, resin, and tropical fruit. Moderately high to high bitterness that remains clean and never harsh. The malt character is low and unobtrusive, providing a soft grainy base. The finish is dry to medium-dry with a lingering, hoppy aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, soft texture. Carbonation is moderate-high. A restrained, smooth alcohol warmth is noticeable but well-integrated, with no hop-derived astringency.
