This Baltic Porter showcases a sophisticated malt profile, blending Floor Malted Bohemian Pilsner and Munich T1 for a rich, bready foundation. Layers of Aromatic and Medium Crystal malts introduce deep toffee and nutty complexities, while Special B contributes intense dark fruit notes of plum and raisin. The inclusion of Chocolate and Carafe Special II malts adds a smooth, roasted character reminiscent of dark cocoa and coffee without any burnt harshness. Cleanly fermented with W34/70 yeast and subtly balanced by Magnum hops, the beer offers a smooth, warming experience with a hint of licorice and a lingering, dryish, vinous finish.
Appearance. Opaque dark brown with deep reddish-copper highlights (SRM 28). Features a thick, persistent tan head with excellent lacing. Clear despite its depth of color.
Aroma. High intensity maltiness with prominent notes of deep toast, toffee, and nuts. Complex esters suggest dried plums, raisins, and currants. Subtle hints of dark chocolate and coffee appear without any acrid or burnt character. No hop aroma is present, and the fermentation profile is clean with a gentle, port-like alcohol presence.
Taste. Initial malty-sweet impression of molasses and caramel, quickly evolving into a smooth, Schwarzbier-like roasted flavor of coffee and licorice. Deep malt richness is balanced by medium-low bitterness from Magnum hops. Mid-palate displays dark dried fruit notes including black currants. The finish is smooth and dryish, leaving a lingering impression of dark chocolate and well-aged alcohol.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and smooth with a deceptive, well-integrated alcohol warmth. Medium-high carbonation creates a mouth-filling texture that keeps the beer from feeling heavy or cloying. Low astringency.
