This Foreign Extra Stout presents a robust sensory profile driven by a significant addition of biscuit malt and classic English hops. The experience begins with a deep, nearly opaque presence, while the aroma is defined by intense dark chocolate and freshly roasted coffee. On the palate, the biscuit malt provides a toasted, bready foundation that supports a firm bitterness from the English hops. Subtle dark fruit esters emerge as the beer warms, leading into a moderately dry, cocoa-driven finish. At 8% ABV, the alcohol is well-integrated, offering a gentle warmth that complements the rich, velvety texture and complex roasted grain layers.
Appearance. Very deep brown to black in color (SRM 38); opaque. Features a large, dense tan head with excellent retention and persistent lacing.
Aroma. High roast intensity with dominant notes of espresso, bittersweet chocolate, and toasted biscuits. Low earthy and floral hop character is present alongside subtle esters of dried plum and a clean, faint alcohol presence.
Taste. Initial impression of rich roasted grain, coffee, and dark chocolate without harsh acridity. Significant biscuit malt flavor provides a toasted mid-palate. Medium-high bitterness (approx. 60 IBU) balances light residual sweetness. Finishes moderately dry with a lingering cocoa and earthy hop aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Moderate carbonation provides a lifted feel, accompanied by a noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth.
