Actualmente Founders es una de las 5 cervecerías de craft beer con más producción de EEUU. Para conocer sus orígenes hay que viajar al año 1997. Es entonces cuando Mike Stevens y Dave Engbers abren las puertas de la fábrica de cerveza en el centro de Grand Rapids (Michigan). Después de unos primeros años difíciles en los que estuvieron a punto de echar la persiana, en el 2001 los fundadores cambian de estrategia. Pasan a centrarse en la elaboración de cerveza siguiendo la filosofía “cerveza hecha para nosotros”. Lo primero que hacen es dejar de filtrar las cervezas y sumar al equipo al maestro cervecero Jeremy Kosmicki. A partir de aquí Founders empiezan una escalada vertiginosa hacia el reconocimiento dentro de la comunidad y, por ende, al aumento exponencial de su producción. En 2007 se mudan a una fábrica mucho mayor que se completaría en unos años con la creación de una nueva ampliación, una nueva bodega para el programa de barricas y una zona de oficinas. Durante varios años han sido considerados dentro del top 5 de cerveceras mundiales por Beer Advocate y Ratebeer. Esto les permitió llegar a todo el globo y contar con más de 350 empleados. En 2014 se produce la controvertida asociación con el grupo cervecero español Mahou-San Miguel, lo que hace que multiplique su presencia en España. KBS, Kentucky Breakfast Stout, fue uno de los primeros éxitos de la cervecería de Michigan. En 2004 fue considerada como la segunda mejor cerveza del mundo por el portal especializado Beer Advocate. Como ellos nos cuentan, esta cerveza es la confirmación de que la paciencia es una virtud. Se trata de una Imperial Stout de 12% con café y vainilla envejecida en barricas de bourbon. Lo que más asombra de esta cerveza, más allá del perfecto balance entre la vainilla, el café, la madera y el licor, es la increíble sedosidad en boca. No, tranquilo, no eres el único que quiere vivir en Kentucky para poder desayunar esto todo los días.
