Dankwood transforms the classic American Amber Ale profile into a monumental, high-gravity experience. A deep, resinous and "dank" hop character collides with the heavy influence of bourbon barrels. Thick layers of rich caramel malt form a sticky, luxurious foundation, while the oak aging contributes sophisticated notes of vanilla, toasted wood, and a whisper of distilled spirit. This Imperial Red IPA is bold and heady, showcasing the alchemy of piney hops and sweet, barrel-derived complexity. It is a potent, contemplative sipper where the intense hop bitterness is balanced by a massive malt presence and the smooth, warming touch of bourbon.
Appearance. Deep copper to reddish-brown (17 SRM). Large, creamy tan head with excellent retention and significant lacing. Generally clear with a slight oily sheen from hop resins and barrel aging.
Aroma. High intensity. Pungent resinous, piney, and dank hop character dominates the foreground. This is supported by a rich, sweet malt base featuring deep caramel, toffee, and toasted bread. Complexity is heightened by bourbon-barrel notes of vanilla, coconut, and charred oak.
Taste. Bold initial impression of rich caramel and sticky malt sweetness. High hop flavor follows, showcasing resinous and piney characteristics. Mid-palate introduces bourbon-soaked oak, vanilla, and subtle spice. Firm bitterness is high but balanced by the massive malt backbone. The finish is lingering and warm with a mix of hop resin and sweet wood.
Mouthfeel. Full, viscous, and mouth-coating body. Moderate carbonation. Significant but smooth alcohol warmth is present. Low astringency with a creamy, sticky texture.
