The experience is dominated by an intense, fresh-roasted java aroma derived from Sumatra and Kona coffee, complemented by layers of imported bitter chocolate. Flaked oats impart a signature velvety texture that carries deep roasted malt flavors and cocoa nib sweetness. This is a bold, complex beer where the dark-roasted bitterness of the coffee integrates seamlessly with a sturdy malt backbone, finishing with a lingering espresso warmth and a clean, toasted dryness.
Appearance. Opaque, midnight black (SRM 40+). It features a dense, frothy, and remarkably persistent cinnamon-colored head that leaves thick lacing on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity, dominated by pungent, fresh-roasted coffee notes of Sumatra and Kona varieties. Supporting layers include dark baker's chocolate, toasted oats, and a hint of molasses. Hop aroma is very low and earthy, while fermentation esters are neutral.
Taste. Initial impression is a wave of rich espresso and bittersweet chocolate. The mid-palate offers a grainy, bready sweetness from flaked oats, balancing the aggressive roasted grain bitterness. The finish is long and dry, echoing charred coffee beans and cocoa, with a clean bitterness that prevents cloying.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally creamy with a silky, coating texture from the oats. Carbonation is moderate. A gentle, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present but never harsh or fusel.
