Java the Hop 2023 is a sophisticated exploration of the synergy between specialty coffee and modern hops. This American IPA features beans from Coava Coffee, meticulously paired to enhance the beer’s bright, citrus-forward hop profile with nuanced roasted layers. On the palate, the 6.8% ABV carries a medium-bodied frame where zesty grapefruit and tropical fruit notes collide with the elegant, berry-like acidity and cocoa undertones of the coffee beans. The finish is decidedly crisp and bitter, true to its style, leaving a lingering trail of resinous pine and freshly cracked coffee. It is a harmonious, aromatic collision of two complex worlds.
Appearance. Deep gold to light amber (approx. 8 SRM) with brilliant clarity. Capped by a persistent, off-white, frothy head that leaves thick lacing on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity. Bright notes of lemon zest and mango intertwine with the distinct, aromatic punch of freshly roasted Coava Coffee beans. The coffee presents as floral and slightly nutty rather than burnt. Subtle, clean, grainy malt sweetness sits in the background with a faint hint of pine.
Taste. Initial burst of citrusy hops followed quickly by the complex, fruity acidity of light-roast coffee. Medium-high bitterness is clean and sharp, balancing a lean, grainy malt base. Mid-palate reveals stone fruit and a touch of dark chocolate. Finishes dry and crisp with a lingering hop resin and coffee bean aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Carbonation is medium-high, providing a lively prickle on the tongue. There is a very subtle, well-integrated alcoholic warmth that enhances the coffee's depth without being harsh.
