Heavy Water is a balanced American Stout crafted for the cooler months, showcasing a purposeful marriage of roasted malts and classic West Coast Chinook hops. The experience begins with inviting toasty aromas that transition into a robust palate defined by deep black coffee flavors. As the liquid settles, notes of unsweetened baker’s chocolate emerge, providing a sophisticated and slightly bitter finish. The Chinook hops lend a subtle resinous counterpoint to the rich malt backbone, ensuring the beer remains assertive yet approachable. This stout captures the essence of the style through its bold roasted profile and clean, lingering bitterness.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (35+ SRM). It supports a large, persistent, light tan head with excellent retention and thick lacing.
Aroma. High intensity roasted malt aroma featuring toasty bread and dark roasted coffee beans. Moderate hop character is present with distinct resinous and piney notes from the Chinook variety. Fermentation is clean with very low fruity esters.
Taste. The initial impression is dominated by intense roasted grains and black coffee. A low malt sweetness provides a foundation for more complex flavors of bittersweet baker's chocolate on the finish. Bitterness is firm and assertive, balancing the roasted character without appearing acrid or burnt.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Carbonation is medium-high, providing a refreshing lift. A light, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present.
