Flying Dog Brewery’s Hare Chaser Grapefruit IPA presents a vibrant sensory experience that highlights the synergy between pungent American hops and fresh citrus additions. The aroma is dominated by an intoxicating rush of pink grapefruit and resinous pine, supported by a subtle, clean foundation of pale malt. On the palate, the beer balances a sweet and tart citrus punch with a firm, moderate-high bitterness typical of an American IPA. The 6.2% ABV provides a gentle, well-integrated warmth that does not overshadow the refreshing qualities. Finishing crisp and dry, it leaves a lingering zest that invites another sip, perfectly capturing the brewer's intent for a fast-paced, citrus-forward sensory chase.
Appearance. Pours a brilliant medium gold to light reddish-amber with a medium-sized, persistent white head that leaves light lacing. Clarity is high, though a very slight haze from the fruit addition may be present.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring bold grapefruit, lemon zest, and subtle piney notes. A low, clean, grainy maltiness provides a supportive base. Fermentation is clean with no significant esters, allowing the citrus adjunct and American hop character to remain the focal point.
Taste. Initial impression is a bright burst of tart grapefruit and sweet citrus. High hop bitterness is balanced by a low to medium-low grainy malt profile. Flavor profile is hop-forward with resinous and pithy notes accompanying the fruit. The finish is dry to medium-dry with a lingering, clean, hoppy aftertaste and a touch of fruit acidity.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth texture. Carbonation is medium-high, enhancing the refreshing and tart qualities of the grapefruit. There is a very light, smooth alcohol warmth and no detectable astringency.
