Fl gge Otho 2020 is a sophisticated Grape Ale that bridges the gap between farmhouse brewing and fine winemaking. Fermented with a characterful Saison yeast and Brettanomyces, it presents an elegant, rustic profile defined by the addition of Barbera and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from the Mattern winery. The aroma is a complex tapestry of dark berries, damp earth, and subtle leather, evolving into a bone-dry, vinous palate. The interplay between the spicy yeast esters and the tannic, fruity depth of the red wine grapes creates a multidimensional experience. With its substantial strength, it offers a refined warmth and a crisp, sparkling finish reminiscent of a dry red wine.
Appearance. Deep ruby to burgundy in color. Pours with a moderate, pinkish-tan head that shows medium-low retention. Clarity is generally good, though a very faint haze from extended maturation may be present.
Aroma. High intensity with prominent red wine aromatics featuring black currant, plum, and blackberry from the Barbera and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. This is layered with complex fermentation notes: spicy black pepper from the Saison yeast and a rustic, earthy funk with hints of leather and horse blanket from Brettanomyces. Malt is a subtle backdrop of neutral, crackery notes.
Taste. The initial impression is exceedingly dry and vinous. Rich flavors of dark berries and stone fruit from the grapes dominate, complemented by a light, rustic earthiness. The Saison yeast provides a firm, spicy phenolic edge. Bitterness is low, but the perceived dryness is enhanced by grape tannins and a mild, pleasant tartness. The finish is long, dry, and clean, with a lingering note of wild yeast complexity and dark fruit skins.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with high, effervescent carbonation that provides a sparkling, wine-like mouthfeel. Noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth reflects the 9.5% ABV. Very low astringency, finishing exceptionally crisp and refreshing.
