This Foreign Extra Stout pours a deep black, releasing an alluring bouquet of roasted English malts that evoke French press coffee and bittersweet dark chocolate. The aroma is highly expressive, layered with subtle dark fruit esters and a whisper of herbal English hops. On the palate, a smooth wave of rich espresso, cocoa, and lightly burnt toast unfolds, supported by a firm, clean bitterness. Balanced but dry, the finish lingers with a pleasant roasty warmth, embodying a classic, robust dark beer character that remains incredibly drinkable and wonderfully complex.
Appearance. Very deep, opaque black (SRM 38) with a large, creamy, tan head displaying excellent retention and leaving rich, dense lacing.
Aroma. High intensity of dark roasted malt, characterized by dark chocolate, espresso, and lightly charred grain. Low earthy, herbal hop notes are present alongside low dark fruit esters reminiscent of dried plum and raisin. Clean fermentation profile with no diacetyl.
Taste. Begins with an initial impression of bittersweet cocoa and espresso-like roast, free of harsh, acrid, or burnt qualities. Moderate earthy hop flavor is backed by a firm, medium-high bitterness. Low yeast-derived fruit esters of plum and black cherry. Finishes moderately dry with a lingering, pleasant roasty bitterness and dark chocolate aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate to moderately high. Exhibits a gentle, well-integrated alcohol warmth without any hot or harsh astringency.
