This imposing English Barley Wine offers an opulent sensory journey, shaped by a staggering 30 months across French and Slovak whisky barrels. The aroma is a dense tapestry of dark treacle, dried figs, and oxidative notes reminiscent of fine Oloroso sherry, underscored by the spicy, vanilla-laden character of the double wood treatment. On the palate, a luxurious malt foundation of caramel and toasted biscuit supports deep flavors of plum and raisin. Despite the massive 17.2% ABV, the spirituous warmth is remarkably integrated, providing a lingering, vinous finish that balances the decadent sweetness with charred oak tannins and a whisper of peat.
Appearance. Deep mahogany with brilliant ruby highlights; pours with a thin, tan collar that dissipates quickly into a persistent ring. Pronounced legs (tears) cling to the glass, signaling high viscosity and alcohol.
Aroma. High intensity; rich layers of toffee, caramel, and molasses intertwined with macerated dark fruits like raisins and dates. Distinctive whisky notes provide spicy oak, vanilla, and a subtle earthy peat, alongside elegant, sherry-like oxidation from extended aging.
Taste. Initial impression is of massive malty sweetness, featuring complex notes of fruitcake, burnt sugar, and dried plums. Middle palate reveals the barrel influence with oak tannin and spirituous depth. Bitterness is moderate but softened by time, finishing with a lingering, warming, and vinous aftertaste of dark fruit and wood.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a luscious, velvety texture. Carbonation is low, enhancing the beer's weight. Significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present throughout without being harsh or fusel.
