West Odnar is a complex Brett Beer that bridges the gap between Belgian tradition and Californian innovation. This collaboration with Liefmans showcases a deep mahogany sensory profile driven by a base of barrel-aged Goudenband. The nose is a sophisticated marriage of toasted brown sugar and opulent red fruit, accented by the delicate floral and stone fruit notes of Viognier grapes. On the palate, a supple wood tannin structure provides backbone, while subtle hints of hop resin and a vinous finish reveal its diverse heritage. The Brettanomyces contribution lends a drying, lightly funky depth that complements the high alcohol without overwhelming the elegant fruit esters.
Appearance. Pours a deep mahogany to dark copper (22-28 SRM) with a fine-textured, off-white to light tan head. Displays moderate head retention and light lacing, with a slight haze expected from the wild fermentation and addition of Viognier grapes.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex layering of toasted brown sugar and caramel malt. Prominent esters of red fruit, specifically cherry and plum, meld with the stone fruit and floral notes of the Viognier grapes. A sophisticated Brettanomyces character provides light leather and earthy funk, while oak aging contributes subtle vanilla and wood spice.
Taste. The initial impression is one of rich malt and dark fruit, featuring flavors of caramelized sugar and dried currants. Mid-palate, the Viognier grapes introduce a vinous acidity and white peach notes. Hop bitterness is low but balanced by a touch of resinous hop flavor and wood tannins. The finish is remarkably dry and crisp due to Brettanomyces attenuation, leaving a lingering aftertaste of oak and tart red berries.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body that feels deceptively lighter due to the high attenuation and moderate-high carbonation. A noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth is present. A subtle tannic astringency from the wood and grape skins adds structure and a clean, puckering quality to the finish.

Avendo ricevuto della Goudenband Flemish Old Brown Ale non pastorizzata nel 2016, iniziammo a farla maturare in botti di quercia americana e francese, aggiungendo la nostra cultura batterica come simbolo dell’unione dei due birrifici. Quando fummo soddisfatti del risultato ottenuto, invitammo gli amici di Liefmans e chiedemmo il loro aiuto per blendare insieme una delle birre più uniche mai create da Barrelworks. West Odnar è un blend equilibrato, 52% di Goudengand maturato in botte, 24% di birra con uve Viognier invecchiata in botte e il 24% di Wild Luponic. Santé!
