This 2022 vintage transforms the silky foundations of Velvet Merkin into a towering Imperial Stout through extensive aging in WhistlePig rye whiskey barrels. The sensory profile is dominated by a luxurious interplay of semi-sweet chocolate and heavy vanilla, punctuated by the spicy, oak-forward character of the rye whiskey. Deep caramel and toasted marshmallow notes emerge from the spirit-soaked wood, melding seamlessly with the rich, roasted grain bill. It pours like obsidian, offering a decadent, viscous texture that carries layers of black cherry and dark cocoa through a lingering, spirit-warmed finish that showcases the mastery of Firestone Walker’s barrel program.

Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque. It supports a dense, dark tan head with moderate retention. Due to the high viscosity and 12% ABV, thick legs are visible on the glass after swirling.

Aroma. High intensity with a rich blend of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and heavy caramel. The barrel influence is prominent, contributing aromas of spicy rye whiskey, toasted oak, and vanilla bean. Low dark fruit esters resembling raisins and dried figs are present.

Taste. Initial impression is decadently sweet with notes of milk chocolate and caramel. This is quickly balanced by a robust roasted malt profile and moderate hop bitterness. The WhistlePig barrel contribution is significant, providing spicy oak and spirit-forward depth. The finish is complex and lingering, featuring charred wood, cocoa, and a gentle vinous character.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present but remains well-integrated rather than sharp.
