This 2024 iteration of Eclipse showcases a profound marriage between an Imperial Stout and Frey Ranch bourbon barrels. The sensory journey begins with an opaque, midnight-black pour crowned by a dense, mocha-colored foam. Intense aromas of bittersweet chocolate, charred oak, and rich vanilla lead into a palate saturated with notes of espresso, black forest cake, and toasted marshmallow. The Frey Ranch barrel influence contributes distinct layers of honeyed rye spice and sweet corn, seamlessly integrated with dark fruit esters of fig and raisin. A velvety, full-bodied mouthfeel concludes with a lingering, warming finish of dark malt and smooth oak tannins.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (SRM 40+). A creamy, deep tan to dark brown head with moderate retention. Thick viscosity creates visible legs upon swirling.
Aroma. High intensity. Deeply roasted malt with notes of dark chocolate, espresso, and molasses. Barrel aging introduces prominent vanilla, caramel, and spicy bourbon notes. Moderate esters of prunes and black currants are balanced by a subtle, earthy hop presence.
Taste. Bold initial impression of dark cocoa and toasted grain. Mid-palate reveals complex layers of vanilla-laced bourbon, toasted oak, and a touch of rye spice. High bitterness from both roasted grains and hops is well-tempered by residual malt sweetness. The finish is long and warming with an aftertaste of dark fruit and charred wood.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied and chewy with a luscious, velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. Significant alcohol warmth is smooth and well-integrated, lacking any harshness or solvent character.
