This 2023 edition of Very Big Moose is an opulent Imperial Stout that marries decadent roasted grains with the spicy complexity of Kentucky rye whisky barrels. Seven months of maturation delivers sophisticated notes of peppery rye spice, vanilla, and toasted oak alongside a velvet-smooth core of dark chocolate and espresso. The high alcohol content provides a refined warmth that supports the rich, viscous texture. This is a harmonious, intensely-flavored stout where the barrel character amplifies the natural dried fruit esters of plum and raisin, resulting in a luxurious, lingering finish of bittersweet cocoa and charred wood.

Appearance. Jet black and fully opaque. It pours with a thick, persistent deep tan head that leaves significant lacing on the glass. High viscosity is evident through the slow-moving legs that form upon swirling.

Aroma. High intensity. Dominated by rich dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, and black licorice. The rye barrel maturation introduces prominent notes of spicy rye grain, vanilla, and toasted oak. Moderate dark fruit esters of prunes and raisins are present, complemented by a clean, warming alcohol aroma.

Taste. Massive initial impact of bittersweet chocolate and espresso. The mid-palate reveals the Kentucky rye whisky influence, providing a peppery spice and toasted oak layer that balances the malt sweetness. Bitterness is firm but smooth, preventing a cloying sensation. The finish is long and complex, fading into notes of charred grain and a lingering vinous quality.
