Fidens Brewing Co Nan’s Axe with Grapefruit
Imperial IPA 8.5 º
This collaborative West Coast Double IPA delivers a vibrant sensory experience defined by a complex hop profile and integrated grapefruit. A layered citrus foundation driven by Citra Cryo and Amarillo melds seamlessly with the fresh, pithy brightness of added grapefruit. Mosaic and Mosaic DynaBoost introduce deep notes of blueberry and tropical fruit, while Simcoe provides a grounding resinous pine character. The profile is remarkably clean and assertive, supported by a neutral malt base that stays out of the way of the high, firm bitterness. It finishes dry and crisp, reflecting a modern approach to the Double IPA style that balances high intensity with exceptional drinkability.
Appearance. Pours a brilliant gold to light amber (approx. 7-8 SRM) with excellent clarity. It is topped by a persistent, dense, off-white head that leaves significant lacing on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring prominent notes of fresh grapefruit zest, resinous pine, and orange peel. Secondary aromas of blueberry and tropical mango from the Mosaic and Citra Cryo are evident. Malt is very low and neutral, offering a faint cracker-like background, while the fermentation profile remains clean.
Taste. Initial impression is a sharp, clean bitterness followed by a wave of citrus peel and resin. Flavors of grapefruit pith, orange, and tropical stone fruit are dominant. Simcoe provides a classic piney backbone that balances the fruit. The malt flavor is low and neutral, providing structure without sweetness. The finish is very dry and crisp with a long, lingering hop bitterness and a refreshing citrus aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly oily texture from the heavy dry-hopping. Carbonation is moderate-high, which enhances the crisp finish. A well-integrated, smooth alcohol warmth is present, consistent with its strength, but lacks any harshness.
