Cuppa Joe from Fell Brewery is a comforting Milk Stout that highlights a collaboration with Pennington’s, featuring their house espresso beans. The sensory experience is defined by a deep, dark profile where the intense aroma of freshly roasted coffee merges with the sweet, creamy character of a lactose base. On the palate, the espresso provides a sharp, authentic coffee bite, beautifully rounded by smooth milk chocolate and toasted malt flavors. This luxurious stout achieves a perfect balance between the roasted bitterness of the beans and the silky, velvety sweetness of the dairy sugars, finishing with a lingering, mocha-like richness.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (SRM 40) with a thick, creamy, tan-colored head that exhibits excellent persistence and leaves dense lacing on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity of freshly roasted Pennington’s house espresso beans dominates the nose. Complementary malt notes of dark chocolate and cocoa are present, along with a distinct, creamy sweetness from the lactose. Hop aroma is very low and earthy, while fermentation esters are neutral.
Taste. The initial impression is of rich espresso and bittersweet chocolate. The mid-palate is characterized by a smooth, milky sweetness from the lactose which balances the roasted malt bitterness. Hop bitterness is low to moderate, providing just enough structure to prevent the beer from being cloying. The finish is long and creamy, with a lingering aftertaste of mocha and lightly toasted grain.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a noticeably creamy and velvety texture due to the addition of lactose. Carbonation is moderate. Alcohol warmth is very low and well-integrated. The beer is smooth and lacks any harsh astringency from the roasted malts or coffee.
