Fanø Bryghus
This imperial stout honors Danish heritage with a regal, dessert-forward profile. It opens with a luxurious bouquet of rich dark chocolate, sweet vanilla, and roasted espresso. Brewed with lactose sugar and cellared on decadent cocoa nibs and vanilla beans, "Gorm the Old" balances the style's assertive dark malt roast with a luscious, velvety sweetness. Nuances of dark plum and black cherry float in the background, while a gentle, warming alcohol presence integrates seamlessly. The overall experience is that of a complex, liquid dark chocolate truffle, presenting a harmonious union of imperial strength and smooth, creamy indulgence.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (SRM 40+). Pours with a thick, dense, persistent dark brown head that leaves thick sheets of lacing on the glass. Pronounced viscosity is visible as slow-running legs upon swirling.
Aroma. Intensely rich and complex. Dominant aromas of bittersweet chocolate, roasted cocoa nibs, and sweet, creamy vanilla beans interlock with a deep, dark roasted malt foundation of espresso and lightly burnt grain. Low but noticeable dark fruit esters of prune and black currant drift beneath the sweet, lactose-driven milk chocolate top notes. Hop aroma is absent, allowing the decadent adjuncts and clean, warm alcohol to shine without solvent character.
Taste. An indulgent initial impression of sweet liquid chocolate, espresso, and rich vanilla cream. The roasted malt bitterness, balancing a moderately high perceived sweetness from the lactose, delivers dark-roasted coffee and bittersweet chocolate flavors. Hop bitterness is moderate, functioning primarily to keep the sweet elements from becoming cloying. Complex layers of dark cherry, fig, and cocoa nibs unfold mid-palate, transitioning into a long, warming finish characterized by lingering chocolate-covered espresso bean notes, smooth alcohol warmth, and a velvety, sweet-roasty aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Full to very full-bodied, chewy, and exceptionally luscious with a velvety, creamy texture enhanced by the unfermentable lactose sugars. Carbonation is low to moderate, complementing the beer's thick, coating nature. A prominent but smooth, well-integrated alcohol warmth glows gently in the throat, without any harshness or hot fusels.
