Eclipse On Fanø is a monumental Imperial Stout that captures the island’s nocturnal intensity through a double-mashed, viscous profile. The complex grist, featuring Maris Otter and Munich malts, establishes a deep, bready foundation that supports layers of intense sensory cues. Pale Chocolate and chocolate malts deliver decadent notes of cocoa and bittersweet dark chocolate, while Carafa Special III and roasted barley contribute an espresso-like roast. Dark Crystal malt rounds out the palate with a hint of burnt sugar and caramel. This 11% ABV ale is velvety and assertive, finishing with a lingering, warming complexity that mirrors a silent, northern night.
Appearance. Jet black and entirely opaque (SRM 40+). Pours with a thick, persistent deep tan head. High viscosity and alcohol content are visible as slow-moving legs on the glass.
Aroma. Intense and complex, featuring prominent notes of dark chocolate, espresso, and toasted grain. Background nuances of caramel and dark fruit esters, such as plum and raisin, emerge from the Maris Otter and Dark Crystal malts. Hop aroma is very low, allowing the roasted character to dominate.
Taste. Initial impression is of rich, bittersweet dark chocolate and heavy roast, supported by a bready Maris Otter and Munich malt backbone. Layers of coffee and burnt sugar are balanced by a firm hop bitterness. The finish is long and complex, transitioning from sweet malt to a lingering, roasty dryness.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a velvety, luscious texture provided by the addition of rolled oats. Carbonation is moderate. A smooth, noticeable alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated, providing a comforting glow without harshness.
