Double Barrel Jesus represents the pinnacle of Imperial Stout intensity, offering a sensory experience of immense depth and viscosity. The pour is pitch black, releasing a high-intensity aroma of bittersweet chocolate, freshly ground coffee, and dark fruits like figs and prunes, accented by the rich, molasses-like scent of muscovado sugar. The double barrel aging introduces refined layers of charred oak and spirituous warmth. On the palate, a thick, fudge-like body carries flavors of cocoa and espresso, transitioning into a complex, lingering finish of dark fruit and warming alcohol. It is a harmonious, velvety masterpiece that balances aggressive roast with opulent sweetness.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque. It pours with a thick, deep tan to dark brown head with moderate retention, leaving oily legs on the glass that highlight its high viscosity and alcohol content.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex blend of rich roasted malts, dark chocolate, and espresso. Significant esters of dark fruits like raisins and plums are present, alongside a heavy sweetness of muscovado sugar. Prominent barrel notes of oak and vanilla meld with a smooth, warming alcohol presence.
Taste. An initial impression of intense sweetness and rich malt gives way to flavors of fudge, baker’s chocolate, and heavily roasted coffee. The hop bitterness is moderate to firm but well-balanced by the massive malt backbone. Nuances of dark fruit and burnt sugar lead into a long, bittersweet finish with a port-like complexity.
Mouthfeel. Full to very full-bodied with a chewy, viscous, and luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A smooth, gentle warmth from the 12% alcohol is clearly present but well-integrated, providing a velvety sensation without being harsh or solventy.
