Espiga Dark Shipa
Espiga’s Dark Shipa is a robust Specialty IPA that reimagines historical sea voyages through a modern, high-gravity lens. At 9.5% ABV, it delivers a complex sensory journey where the deep, roasted essence of black malt provides a chocolatey foundation without acridity. The aromatic profile is defined by the fragrant addition of Madagascar vanilla beans and the pungent snap of Indian black pepper, which harmonize with the earthy, structured notes provided by French oak chips. This mahogany-hued ale balances firm hop bitterness against the creamy sweetness of vanilla, resulting in a warming, multi-layered finish of wood and spice.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to near-black (35–40 SRM). Opaque in the glass with a persistent, creamy, light-tan head that leaves moderate lacing.
Aroma. High intensity. Initial notes of dark chocolate and toasted bread from the black malt, followed immediately by prominent Madagascar vanilla and a spicy, floral kick of black pepper. Moderate resinous hop character sits in the background, complemented by an earthy, woody scent from the oak aging.
Taste. Initial impression is rich and roasty with flavors of espresso and cocoa. The mid-palate introduces a smooth vanilla sweetness and a distinct, sharp bite of black pepper. High bitterness is present but tempered by the oak tannins and the beer’s body. The finish is dry and lingering, characterized by a blend of charred wood, spicy pepper, and a clean alcohol presence.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, almost creamy texture. Moderate carbonation. Significant but well-integrated alcohol warmth. A slight tannic astringency from the oak chips provides a structured, drying sensation on the tongue.
