Erdinger Weissbräu

Erdinger Urweisse is a quintessential Weissbier that celebrates old Bavarian tradition with a pronounced spicy character. This top-fermented classic opens with a vibrant bouquet of clove and ripe banana, underpinned by a rustic, bready malt foundation. Its naturally cloudy appearance and effervescent nature lead to a palate defined by soft wheat sweetness and a distinctive yeast presence. The use of traditional Hallertauer hops provides a subtle herbal counterpoint to the doughy Pilsner malt and wheat grist. Refreshing yet flavorful, it finishes dry and crisp with a lingering phenolic spice that invites another sip, embodying the rustic charm of a historical wheat beer.

Appearance. Deep gold to light amber (approx. 5–6 SRM). It features a very thick, moussy, long-lasting white head with excellent lacing. The appearance is characteristically hazy with a soft glow from the suspended yeast and wheat proteins.

Aroma. High intensity of spicy phenols, specifically clove, accompanied by moderate banana esters. The malt character is moderately bready and doughy, reflecting a high proportion of malted wheat. Very low herbal hop aroma is present in the background.

Taste. The initial impression is of soft, grainy wheat and bready Pilsner malt. This is quickly followed by a prominent clove and light banana fermentation profile. Bitterness is low, serving only to prevent the beer from being cloying. The finish is relatively dry and very refreshing, with a lingering spicy yeast character.

Mouthfeel. Medium body with a characteristic fluffy, creamy fullness. Carbonation is high and effervescent, providing a spritzy sensation on the tongue. There is no perceived alcohol warmth or astringency.

The Urweisse is a classic Bavarian wheat ale that pours a hazy light amber colour with a big foamy head.

The soft initial taste is accompanied by malted wheat and caramel flavours mixed with hints of clove, banana and yeast. This is followed by a lingering finish of sun-ripened aroma hops from the Hallertau valley. Urweisse contains slightly more carbon dioxide than other Erdinger wheat beers – making it a lively taste sensation

Notes of lemon, earthiness, bread dough and some subtle banana complement the particularly spicy aroma. Its flavour is slightly sweet and tart with notes of spice and bread.
