Middletown Mud Pie is a decadent Imperial Stout that pours with the viscosity of liquid fudge, crowned by a dense mocha-colored head. A concentrated aroma of chocolate brownie batter is defined by rich cacao nibs and the aromatic floral sweetness of Madagascar vanilla. The palate reveals complex layers of melted milk chocolate, nutty butter pecan, and deep caramel swirls, reminiscent of a frosted black forest cake. A measured hint of sea salt subtly cuts through the intense sweetness, sharpening the roast and enhancing the nutty depth provided by the pecans. This is a massive, dessert-forward experience with a lingering, velvety finish.
Appearance. SRM 40+; opaque, jet black with high viscosity visible as legs on the glass. Features a thick, creamy, deep mocha-colored head with moderate retention.
Aroma. High intensity. Prominent notes of dark cocoa and bittersweet chocolate from cacao nibs, backed by creamy Madagascar vanilla. Secondary aromas of toasted pecans and dark fruit esters resembling black cherry. Rich, roasty malt base with underlying caramel and toffee sweetness.
Taste. Initial impression is intensely sweet and fudge-like. Dominant flavors of milk chocolate fountains, nutty pecans, and vanilla frosting. The malt character is deep and complex with notes of toasted bread and burnt sugar. Hop bitterness is moderate but perceived as low due to the thick residual sweetness.
