Equilibrium Brewery’s Magic Bars is a decadent, viscous Imperial Stout that masterfully liquifies its namesake dessert. At 11% ABV, the pour is ink-black and syrupy, releasing high-intensity aromas of dark chocolate cake batter, maple-drenched pancakes, and toasted coconut. The palate is an opulent layering of creamy peanut butter and earthy pecan pie filling, punctuated by cacao nibs and the tropical sweetness of Coco Lopez. Despite its massive sweetness and chewy, velvet-like body, the beer maintains a sophisticated integration of its many adjuncts. It finishes with a silky, lingering trail of maple syrup and chocolate-covered nuts, perfectly capturing the indulgent spirit of the classic dessert bar.
Appearance. SRM 40+, jet black and opaque. The pour is thick and syrupy with visible legs on the glass. It features a small, dark tan head with low retention, likely impacted by the oils from the nuts and coconut additions.
Aroma. High intensity; rich roasted malt and cacao nibs provide a deep bittersweet chocolate base. Strong nutty aromatics of peanut and pecan are complemented by sugary maple syrup and sweet, candy-like coconut. Very low dark fruit esters; no perceived hop aroma.
Taste. Initial impression is intensely sweet and dessert-like. Dominant flavors of chocolate syrup and coconut custard are followed by layers of creamy peanut butter and earthy pecan pie molasses. Maple syrup adds a woody, sugary depth. Bitterness is low to moderate, overshadowed by the massive malt and adjunct profile. The finish is long and sweet, lingering with chocolate-covered nuts and coconut cream.
Mouthfeel. Full to very full-bodied, extremely viscous, and chewy. Carbonation is low. Noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth provides a gentle glow. The texture is silky and velvety with no significant grain or nut astringency.
