Epic Brewing’s Sequoia captures the imposing scale of its namesake through a bold, resin-forward West Coast Double IPA profile. Centered on the unique Sequoia hop variety, the sensory experience is dominated by massive, forest-like aromas of crushed pine needles, fresh sap, and a sharp hit of citrus rind. The pale gold pour carries a lean, crackery malt base that allows the hop’s colossal bitterness to take center stage without the distraction of heavy caramel or residual sugar. At 8.5% ABV, a smooth, warming alcohol presence integrates with a dry, crisp finish, leaving a lingering, resinous trail of evergreen and pithy grapefruit on the palate.
Appearance. Gold to light orange-copper with a bright, clear clarity. Features a moderate-sized, persistent off-white head that leaves significant lacing on the glass.
Aroma. Intense hop-forward aroma dominated by heavy pine, resinous sap, and woody undertones. Behind the forest-like character are light notes of grapefruit peel and a clean, neutral, slightly grainy malt presence. Fermentation is clean with only a hint of smooth, well-integrated alcohol.
Taste. A punch of aggressive hop bitterness hits the palate immediately, supported by a very low, clean, crackery malt flavor. The flavor profile is centered on the Sequoia hop, delivering massive resin, pine, and citrus pith characteristics. The finish is very dry and crisp with a long-lingering, firm bitterness that remains clean rather than harsh. A subtle, smooth alcohol warmth is present in the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-bodied with a smooth, slightly oily texture from the hop resins. Carbonation is moderate-high, providing a crisp bite that enhances the dry finish. Alcohol warmth is noticeable but refined and never solventy.
