Despite Epic Brewing Company's reputation for aggressive hopping, a restrained addition of Citra hops provides just a hint of citrus brightness rather than dominant bitterness. The 8% ABV manifests as a smooth, integrated alcohol sweetness that enhances the full-bodied, chewy texture. It is a surprisingly approachable strong ale where fermentation character takes center stage over raw hop intensity.
Appearance. Deep amber to reddish-brown (16-20 SRM) with a fine-textured, light tan head showing moderate retention and light lacing. Generally clear.
Aroma. High intensity aroma featuring a blend of sweet, bready malt, caramel, and a distinctive banana ester. Low levels of Citra hops contribute a faint citrus note, well-integrated with the fruity yeast character and a subtle, clean alcohol presence.
Taste. Initial impression is malty-rich with flavors of toffee and toasted nuts. The mid-palate is dominated by ripe banana and soft citrus from the Citra hops. Bitterness is moderate but secondary to the malt and yeast character. The finish is relatively smooth with a lingering alcohol sweetness and a medium-dry, warming aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full, chewy body with a smooth, velvety texture. Moderate carbonation provides a gentle lift. Alcohol warmth is noticeable and pleasant but avoids being hot or sharp.
