Dutch Bargain

This massive Imperial Stout is an exercise in extreme viscosity and depth, presenting a motor-oil-like appearance that commands attention. The sensory experience is dominated by an intense, multilayered malt profile of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and black licorice, reflective of its extraordinarily high starting gravity. Given the 16% ABV, a profound but well-integrated alcohol warmth emerges, intertwining with dark fruit notes of dried figs and black currants. The mouthfeel is famously thick and syrupy, balanced by a firm roasty bitterness that prevents the heavy residual sugars from becoming cloying. It finishes with a lingering, vinous complexity reminiscent of a fine port.

Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40+ SRM). It forms a dense, dark tan head with moderate to low retention. Due to the high alcohol and extreme sugar content, the beer exhibits thick, oily legs that coat the glass when swirled.

Aroma. High intensity with a rich blend of roasted grain, dark chocolate, and tar. Esters are prominent, offering notes of raisins and prunes. A smooth, warming alcohol presence is noticeable, alongside hints of burnt caramel and a very low earthy hop character.

Taste. Initial impression is deeply sweet and malty, followed by aggressive roasted flavors of coffee and scorched cocoa. Medium-high bitterness provides necessary balance. Flavors of black currant and molasses develop in the mid-palate, leading to a long, warming finish with lingering notes of dark fruit and roasted grain.

Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied, viscous, and exceptionally chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present throughout, providing a comforting heat without being sharp or solventy.
