This session-strength version of an American Stout leads with a deep, jet-black appearance and a creamy, tan head. The Maris Otter base provides a sturdy foundation for a complex malt architecture including Chocolate malt and Roasted Barley, yielding intense aromas of fresh-ground coffee and bittersweet cocoa. The addition of Simcoe hops adds a subtle resinous pine and citrus edge, characteristic of the style. On the palate, a silky texture from oat flakes balances the assertive roasted bitterness. It finishes with a pleasant sweetness and lingering notes of dark chocolate, providing surprising depth and a flavorful, rounded experience for its approachable strength.
Appearance.Jet black (38 SRM) and opaque. Large, persistent light tan head with excellent lacing.
Aroma.Moderate to high roast intensity, dominated by dark chocolate, espresso, and roasted coffee beans. A low but distinct resinous and woody hop character from the Simcoe hops is present. Low fruity esters and a clean fermentation profile.
Taste.Initial flavors of rich cocoa and toasted bread. The mid-palate introduces sharp roasted coffee and burnt grain notes, supported by a mild caramel sweetness from the Crystal malts. Mouthfeel.Medium-full body with a notable creaminess and silkiness derived from the oat flakes. Moderate carbonation. Smooth finish with no alcohol warmth and very low roast-derived astringency.
