Double Vision Brewing Near Miss - DVB With Emerson Red IIPA
Near Miss is a high-octane American Amber Ale amplified to Double Red IPA proportions through a collaboration between Double Vision and Emerson’s. A gargantuan malt base provides a deep copper foundation for a complex New Zealand hop assault. Centennial and Nelson Sauvin lead the charge, offering distinctive notes of gooseberry and pine, while Motueka, Rakau, and Riwaka infuse the profile with zesty citrus and lush passionfruit. At 8.2% ABV, the beer delivers a resonant warmth that balances a firm, persistent bitterness. This brew merges the rich, carmelly depth of a classic amber with the aggressive, tropical intensity of modern southern hemisphere hops.
Appearance. Deep copper-red to reddish-brown in color (15-17 SRM). Features a moderately large, off-white to light tan head with excellent retention and significant lacing. Clarity is generally clear, though it may show a slight haze from high hopping rates.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma with prominent notes of passionfruit and gooseberry from Nelson Sauvin and Rakau, followed by zesty lime and grapefruit citrus from Motueka and Riwaka. A floral, piney undertone from Centennial is present. The maltiness is moderately high, displaying rich caramel and toasted bread crust characteristics that support the hop profile.
Taste. Initial impression is a robust malty sweetness with deep caramel and toasted notes. This is immediately countered by punchy hop flavors of tropical passionfruit and citrus zest. A solid, firm bitterness provides a necessary counterpoint to the gargantuan malt base. The fermentation is clean, leading into a medium-full, lingering finish where resinous hop notes and caramel sweetness persist without being cloying.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full to full-bodied with a smooth, velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate. A noticeable, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present throughout. Low astringency and a rich, mouth-coating quality.

This brew is all about New Zealand brewing, and it turns out that this recipe has landed somewhere between Oreti Red (the predecessor of Daredevil) and Red Rascal (the first beer of ours Richard Emerson loved) in terms of malt bill, process, and hop schedules... but has the throttle turned up to 8.2% to maximise the flavour!
Near Miss gets its name from one of the first times we were out in Dunedin with Richard and Greg. We got Flamingo Scooters to take to town from the brewery, and Richard had never used one. The only problem we realised at full speed was that he didn’t know how to stop! He was screaming, “How do you STOP?!” while we yelled back instructions. Only when we remembered he couldn’t hear us did we look back and gesture how to hit the brakes. He slammed the brakes, put his foot down, and came to a halt right before a busy intersection. It was truly a Near Miss !
