This formidable English Barley Wine, clocking in at a massive 17.8% ABV, presents an intense sensory tapestry woven from extended maturation in Oloroso Sherry Casks and Hungarian oak. The nose is a rich concentrate of dark toffee, dried figs, and toasted walnuts, punctuated by the spicy, vanilla-tinged structure of the oak. On the palate, it is exceptionally viscous and beastly, delivering deep layers of molasses, raisin, and a distinctive nutty oxidation characteristic of the Oloroso influence. The finish is long and warming, balanced by a firm tannic grip from the wood and a sophisticated vinous complexity that defines its pot still heritage.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark chestnut with ruby highlights (18-22 SRM); very low, off-white to tan head with minimal retention; exceptional clarity with heavy, visible legs on the glass indicating high viscosity.
Aroma. High intensity; rich malt profile of dark caramel, toffee, and treacle; pronounced dark fruit esters including figs, plums, and raisins; significant nutty, oxidative sherry notes; subtle spicy oak and vanilla; well-integrated but powerful alcohol aroma.
Taste. Bold initial sweetness of molasses and burnt sugar; multi-layered malt character featuring bread and biscuit; heavy dark fruit and marmalade esters; Oloroso-derived flavors of hazelnut and dry wine; moderate bitterness that is largely offset by malt and alcohol; finish is lingering and complex with vinous notes and oak tannins.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a syrupy, luscious texture; low carbonation; significant, throat-warming alcohol presence that remains smooth; slight tannic astringency from the Hungarian oak maturation.
