This 2022 vintage Imperial Stout presents an opulent sensory journey defined by its extensive Bourbon Barrel Aging. The pour is viscous and ink-black, immediately releasing an aromatic bouquet of charred oak, vanilla, and rich hazelnut. On the palate, a decadent praline sweetness interlaces with intense flavors of bittersweet chocolate and espresso, derived from a complex array of roasted malts. The hazelnut character provides a toasted, oily depth that complements the spirituous warmth of the bourbon. Despite its formidable strength, the finish remains harmonious, balancing sugary caramel notes against a firm, roasty bitterness and a lingering, velvety oak presence.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (SRM 40+); produces a thick, dark tan head with moderate retention. High viscosity is evidenced by slow-moving legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity; prominent layers of toasted hazelnut and sweet praline are bolstered by bourbon-derived notes of vanilla and coconut. Deep roasted malt character provides scents of dark chocolate and scorched coffee, with subtle dried fruit esters like raisins and figs.
Taste. Initial impression is richly sweet and nutty, moving into a mid-palate of dark cocoa and toasted bread. The hazelnut praline adds a confectionery layer that is tempered by a firm roast bitterness. Bourbon-soaked oak and caramel emerge toward the finish, which is long, warming, and bittersweet.
Mouthfeel. Full and exceptionally chewy with a luscious, velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, enhancing the beer's weight. A smooth, well-integrated alcohol warmth is significant but not harsh.
