Dogfish Head Craft Brewery Raison D'Extra - Bourbon Barrel Aged (R&D 2019)

This massive Belgian Dark Strong Ale presents a hedonistic profile, leveraging an exceptional 17.2% ABV and extensive maturation in bourbon barrels. It delivers a rich, vinous character reminiscent of a vintage red wine, layered with the deep sweetness of raisins and unrefined brown sugar. The bourbon barrels impart luxurious nuances of vanilla and toasted oak, which weave through a dense tapestry of dark stone fruits like plums and figs. Complex and opulent, the beer balances its immense malt weight with spicy phenols and a persistent, warming alcohol presence, resulting in a sophisticated, slow-sipping experience with profound depth and a lingering, mahogany-hued elegance.
Appearance. Deep coppery-brown to dark mahogany (approx. 20-30 SRM). It pours with a thin, light-tan head that has low persistence due to the extreme alcohol content. Generally clear, though it exhibits significant viscosity and 'legs' on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex mix of rich maltiness and deep fruit. Strong esters of raisins, plums, and figs are complemented by the distinct vanilla and charred oak of bourbon barrels. A bready-toasty malt base supports background notes of brown sugar, spicy peppery phenols, and a smooth, perfumy alcohol presence.
Taste. Rich and complex maltiness with an initial impression of sweet raisins and dark caramel. The mid-palate reveals bourbon-derived vanilla and toasted oak tannins. Secondary flavors of dates and prunes meld with a vinous, red wine-like character. Despite the massive scale, the finish is moderately dry to off-dry, balanced by a low to moderate bitterness and significant alcohol warmth. No hop flavor is present.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and viscous with a creamy texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, providing just enough lift to the heavy body. Significant alcohol warmth is noticeable but remains smooth. Subtle tannic astringency from the barrel aging adds structure.
