Leckhampton Hill 2021 is a vibrant, mixed-fermentation Brett Beer that harmonizes foraged elderflower with a year of maturation in red wine barrels. This golden ale presents a complex sensory bouquet where the perfume of fresh elderflower leads, supported by the signature funk of a mixed culture reminiscent of sun-dried hay and lemon zest. Twelve months in oak imparts a refined tartness and subtle vinous character, balancing the grassy, floral top notes. It is a quenching and elegant expression of terroir, finishing bone-dry with a delicate, lingering citrus and herbal essence derived from its prolonged aging.
Appearance. Pale gold to light amber (SRM 4-7); displays a slight haze from the mixed culture and elderflower infusion. Pours with a moderate, white head that dissipates to a fine collar with light lacing.
Aroma. High intensity; prominent floral elderflower and lemon peel notes are immediately evident. This is layered over a rustic Brett character featuring barnyard funk, wet hay, and a distinct grassy freshness. Subtle oak and a faint vinous red wine undercurrent emerge as the beer warms.
Taste. Initial tartness is brisk but balanced, leading into a mid-palate of bright lemon and floral elderflower. The fermentation character provides a complex funk—earthy and spicy—without being overwhelming. Oak-derived tannins offer structure, while the red wine barrels contribute a mild fruit acidity. The finish is exceptionally dry, crisp, and quenching.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with high, effervescent carbonation that enhances the quenching quality. There is a very light tannic astringency from the oak and a slight, well-integrated alcohol warmth.
