This 2017 vintage of The Abyss represents a masterful fusion of a robust Imperial Stout with the singular, earthy influence of ten months in tequila barrels. The sensory journey begins with an intense foundation of black strap molasses and licorice, offering a deep, viscous sweetness that supports a core of bittersweet chocolate and espresso. The tequila aging contributes unmistakable notes of agave nectar and white pepper, which are softened by the creamy, botanical luxury of whole vanilla beans and a hint of tannic cherry bark. It is a powerful, harmonious beer where the high ABV provides a sophisticated, spirituous warmth against a backdrop of dark fruit.

Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40+ SRM). Pours with a thick, deep tan head with moderate retention that leaves significant lacing and visible legs on the glass, indicative of its high alcohol content and viscosity.

Aroma. High intensity with a rich blend of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, and burnt sugar from the molasses. Distinctive tequila-derived agave and light oak spice mingle with black licorice and vanilla. Moderate dark fruit esters of plum and raisin are present, while hops remain low and earthy.

Taste. Massive initial impact of bittersweet cocoa and espresso. The mid-palate reveals complex layers of molasses, anise, and a peppery tequila character. Mouthfeel. Full to very full-bodied with a thick, chewy, and velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A smooth, noticeable alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated, accompanied by a slight tannic dryness from the cherry bark.
