This 2016 vintage Imperial Stout showcases a masterclass in barrel integration, having spent a full year in Scotch whiskey casks. The result is a profound sensory journey where the base beer's intense dark chocolate and espresso roast meld with distinctive peat-inflected smoke and earthy oak. Aromas of black licorice and dried figs are punctuated by a refined boozy warmth that signals its significant strength. On the palate, a complex interplay of charred malt bitterness and residual molasses sweetness is tempered by smooth, tannic oak. It is a viscous, meditative sipper with a lingering, warming finish of smoky Scotch and deep cocoa.

Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40+ SRM). Pours with a thick, dense, deep tan head that shows moderate retention, eventually fading to a creamy ring while leaving persistent lacing. High viscosity is visible as legs on the glass.

Aroma. High intensity. A rich bouquet of bittersweet chocolate, heavy roast, and black currants. The Scotch barrel aging contributes dominant notes of peaty smoke, damp earth, and vanilla-tinged oak. Subtle hints of black licorice and prune emerge as it warms, alongside a clean, spirit-like alcohol presence.

Taste. Intensely flavorful and layered. Initial notes of dark roasted grains and cocoa powder are immediately joined by a complex, smoky peat character from the Scotch barrels. Mid-palate reveals dark fruit esters—raisins and figs—balanced by a firm hop and roast bitterness. The finish is long and warming, offering a harmonious blend of charred oak, lingering espresso, and a touch of sweet molasses.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied, chewy, and exceptionally velvety. Low to moderate carbonation enhances the luscious, syrupy texture. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present throughout, providing a comforting glow without harshness.
