Deer Bear Skull King is an assertive Double IPA that masterfully balances classic and modern West Coast traits. The aromatic profile is defined by the resinous pine and grapefruit characteristic of Chinook and Simcoe, intertwined with the tropical mango and mixed berry notes of Mosaic. Amarillo adds a bright layer of orange zest and floral complexity. On the palate, a clean, supportive malt backbone allows the intense, firm bitterness to shine, leading to a crisp and dry finish. The 8.5% ABV provides a subtle, well-integrated warmth that enhances the hop oils without compromising the beer's high drinkability.
Appearance. Deep gold to light copper (7-9 SRM) with brilliant clarity. Pours with a moderate-sized, persistent, off-white head that leaves consistent lacing.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring pungent resin, pine needles, and grapefruit from Chinook and Simcoe. Secondary notes of mango, blueberry, and floral orange zest from Mosaic and Amarillo emerge as it warms. Neutral, grainy malt is barely perceptible.
Taste. Strong, complex hop flavors of citrus peel, pine resin, and tropical passionfruit. Very high bitterness that is clean and lacks harshness. Low, supportive crackery malt character. The finish is dry to medium-dry with a lingering, resinous hop aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, oily texture from hop resins. Medium-high carbonation. A restrained, smooth alcohol warmth is present but not solventy.
