Deeds Brewing To Build A Fire

This formidable Imperial Stout delivers an immersive sensory experience, defined by twelve months of maturation in bourbon barrels. The pour is an impenetrable, viscous obsidian, releasing an intense bouquet of toasted hazelnut and dark cacao. These rich adjuncts meld seamlessly with the base beer’s roasted malt profile and the barrel’s influence, offering layers of vanilla, charred oak, and sweet bourbon. On the palate, a decadent wave of bittersweet chocolate and praline-like nuttiness meets a profound, velvety body. At 14.9% ABV, a smooth, integrated alcohol warmth lingers alongside notes of dried figs and raisins, providing a luxurious, warming finish perfect for slow sipping.
Appearance. SRM 40+. Opaque, jet black. Pours with a thick, deep tan head that settles into a persistent collar, leaving significant oily legs on the glass due to the high alcohol content and viscosity.
Aroma. High intensity. Pronounced notes of bittersweet chocolate, roasted coffee, and toasted hazelnut dominate. The bourbon barrel contributes distinct aromas of vanilla, caramel, and toasted oak. Background esters suggest dark fruits like raisins and prunes, while a clean, warming ethanol presence is noticeable but well-integrated.
Taste. Initial impression is of immense richness, featuring layers of dark cocoa and sweet hazelnut praline. The malt character is deeply roasted but not harsh, providing a coffee-like bitterness that balances the residual sweetness. Bourbon flavors of vanilla and spice are prominent. The finish is long and complex, showing a harmonious blend of oak tannins, dark fruit esters, and a smooth, lingering alcohol warmth.
Mouthfeel. Full to very full-bodied with a thick, chewy, and viscous texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, enhancing the velvety mouthfeel. Significant alcohol warmth is present but smooth, characteristic of its high gravity and extended barrel aging.
