Masters of Darkness III emerges as a monumental Imperial Stout, blending the legendary Black Albert and Marius bases. Five years in Islay peated whisky barrels has forged a complex sensory profile defined by intense medicinal smoke, iodine, and charred oak. The aroma is a deep well of espresso and dark chocolate, accented by vinous notes of port and dried figs. On the palate, the Islay influence provides a sharp, smoky counterpoint to the viscous, malt-driven sweetness. This aged titan offers a velvety, full-bodied experience where the 12% ABV manifests as a smooth, lingering warmth alongside persistent flavors of leather and dark fruit.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (40+ SRM). A thin, dark tan head forms briefly but dissipates quickly due to high alcohol and extended aging, leaving oily legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex blend of medicinal peat smoke, iodine, and campfire. Supporting notes of roasted coffee, bittersweet chocolate, and dark fruit esters like raisins and prunes. Significant vinous, port-like oxidation from five years of barrel aging.
Taste. Initial impression of intense peated whisky and salt, transitioning into rich dark chocolate and burnt grain. Mid-palate reveals layers of dried fig and black currant. Medium-high bitterness is present but smoothed by age. The finish is very long and warming, with lingering notes of tobacco and peat.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally viscous with a chewy, velvety texture. Carbonation is low. Significant but well-integrated alcohol warmth is present without being harsh.
