Heaven & Hell is an imposing Imperial Stout that commands attention with its massive, ink-black presence. A deep sensory journey begins with an intense bouquet of dark chocolate, freshly roasted coffee, and toasted malts, accented by subtle vanilla and fine wood-like nuances. On the palate, it is incredibly dense and viscous, delivering a rich layer of bittersweet cocoa and charred grain. The heavy malt backbone is masterfully countered by a firm, smooth bitterness, while the significant alcohol presence provides a comforting, sophisticated warmth. It finishes with a lingering, complex interplay of dark fruit esters and a clean, toasted dryness.
Appearance. Jet black and fully opaque (SRM 40+). Pours with a thick, creamy, deep tan to mocha-colored head that shows moderate retention. Distinct legs are visible on the glass due to the high viscosity and alcohol content.
Aroma. High intensity. Dominant aromas of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and heavy toast. Prominent secondary notes of vanilla bean and a touch of oak-like woodiness. Low dark fruit esters resembling prunes and raisins. Alcohol is noticeable but smooth, lacking any solvent sharpness. Hop aroma is low, providing a faint earthy backdrop.
Taste. Initial impression is powerful and decadent. Rich chocolate and black coffee flavors dominate the mid-palate, supported by a significant toasted malt sweetness. Bitterness is firm and assertive, derived from both roasted grains and hops, but remains velvety rather than harsh. Nuances of vanilla and charred wood add complexity. The finish is long and warming, evolving from sweet malt to a lingering, roasty aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Full to very full-bodied with a chewy, luscious, and syrupy texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, enhancing the beer's significant weight. A clear, gentle alcohol warmth is present throughout, providing a velvety sensation without astringency.
