Imperial IPA 9.2 º 60 IBU
This Double IPA showcases the classic profile of Amarillo hops, delivering a punchy sensory experience defined by bright citrus and soft floral notes. At 9.2% ABV, it presents a deep amber hue and an intense aroma that leads with orange zest and a hint of stone fruit. The palate is balanced by a robust, slightly sweet malty backbone that grounds the aggressive hop character. Expect layers of grapefruit and a subtle grassy undertone that transition into a clean, firm bitterness. It remains surprisingly drinkable for its strength, finishing with a lingering resinous warmth and dry, hoppy persistence.
Appearance. Deep amber to light copper color; features a persistent, off-white, creamy head with excellent lacing; clarity is good, though a very slight haze is acceptable.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma dominated by Amarillo hops, offering distinct notes of tangerine, orange peel, and floral blossoms. A supportive, slightly sweet malt presence provides hints of honey and toasted grain, while fermentation is clean with a touch of well-integrated alcohol.
Taste. Leading with vibrant citrus and stone fruit hop flavors, the palate quickly introduces a firm, moderately high bitterness. A clean, supportive malt character provides a bready, lightly sweet foundation that prevents the hops from becoming harsh. The finish is medium-dry with a lingering grapefruit-rind aftertaste and light grassy notes.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly oily texture; carbonation is moderate-high, providing a crisp lift. A noticeable but smooth alcohol warmth is present, devoid of any solventy heat or astringency.

Although more noted for their big dark stouts, De Molen often turn their hand to making lighter coloured beers.  And they are always experimenting with IPA’s.  While these beers are not part of their core range, they are presented quite frequently.  There seems to be two distinct styles of double IPA’s – they are either heavy and sweet, or lighter and drier. The Amarillo is initially, as it hits the palate, slightly sweeter style DIPA’s. But then again it’s very much a malt forward beer, heavily dry-hopped with Amarillo and clocking in at 9.3% abv, so don’t expect much sweetness, just a slight hint to balance out the bitterness that comes later. Quite a thick caramel malt body with over-ripe tropical fruit aroma and resinous, piney flavour.Moving away from the American-style names, and back to the more traditional theme, this beer has now been renamed Storm & Bliksem.
