De Lange Lijs Eclipse Quadrupel BA Glenfarclas
This Belgian Dark Strong Ale presents a sophisticated fusion of monastic tradition and Speyside elegance. Aged for six months in Glenfarclas 1989 whisky barrels, it radiates aromas of dried figs, dates, and heather honey, underscored by a refined oak-driven vanilla. The palate is luxuriously complex, weaving rich, bready malts and dark caramel with the smooth, warming character of aged Scotch. Subtle peppery phenols from the Belgian yeast harmonize with the spirit’s influence, leading to a lingering, warming finish that balances moderate sweetness with delicate wood tannins. It is a decadent, full-bodied experience where the barrel provides a seamless, spirited depth.
Appearance. Deep coppery-brown to dark mahogany (SRM 18-22) with a huge, dense, and persistent light tan head. Shows good clarity despite the strength and extended barrel aging.
Aroma. High intensity and complex. Rich, bready-toasty malt and dark caramel are layered with prominent esters of raisins, plums, and dried cherries. The Glenfarclas barrel contribution adds sophisticated notes of single malt whisky, honeyed oak, and vanilla, alongside subtle peppery yeast phenols.
Taste. Initial impression of deep malt richness and dark fruit sweetness. Flavors of black cherries, figs, and molasses are balanced by the warming, spirited presence of the whisky. Low bitterness allows the malt and alcohol to lead the balance, while the finish is moderately dry with a lingering hint of oak and sherry-like fruitiness.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate to high but fine-beaded and soft. A noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth provides a comforting glow without being harsh.
