This Specialty IPA presents a striking sensory contrast, utilizing vegetable charcoal to achieve an ink-black appearance while maintaining the vibrant soul of a hop-forward ale. The aroma is dominated by the pungent duo of Citra and Riwaka, projecting a complex bouquet of pink grapefruit, tropical passionfruit, and a subtle New Zealand-style diesel edge. On the palate, the hop intensity is supported by a slender malt spine of toasted bread and light cocoa, purposefully avoiding the burnt acidity of a stout. It finishes remarkably dry and resinous, allowing the citrus oils and clean bitterness to linger with refreshing clarity.

Appearance. Opaque, deep black color (40+ SRM) with a dense, persistent tan head that leaves significant lacing. Despite its dark hue, the liquid appears polished and free of murkiness.

Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring Citra-driven lime and grapefruit zest alongside Riwaka’s tropical passionfruit and crushed gooseberry notes. Very low malt character provides a background hint of dark chocolate and toast without any acrid or burnt qualities.

Taste. Initial impression is hop-forward with flavors of tropical fruit and citrus peel. Malt flavors are medium-low, offering a smooth, debittered roast character similar to cold-brew coffee. Bitterness is firm and assertive, typical of the style, leading into a dry finish. The aftertaste is clean, featuring lingering resin and citrus oils with no harsh astringency.

Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate to high, providing a crispness that enhances drinkability. A very light alcohol warmth is present at 6.7% ABV, but it remains well-integrated.
