Cycle Brewing Company DBR

This Double Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout presents an imposing profile defined by its 15% ABV and extended maturation. The sensory experience is dominated by an intense interplay of dark chocolate, espresso, and charred oak. The double barrel treatment introduces layers of rich bourbon-soaked vanilla, toasted coconut, and a hint of pipe tobacco. Its immense viscosity creates a luxurious, coating sensation on the palate, while the deep malt base provides a sturdy foundation for notes of black cherry and raisin. It finishes with a harmonious blend of bittersweet roast and a persistent, sophisticated alcohol warmth typical of its high gravity, offering immense complexity and depth.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40+ SRM). A thin, dark tan head forms with moderate retention, eventually receding to a persistent ring. Pronounced legs and high viscosity are visible upon swirling the glass.
Aroma. High intensity. Potent notes of dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, and black licorice are immediately apparent. The double barrel aging contributes heavy aromas of vanilla, caramel, and charred oak. Esters of dried figs and prunes meld with a clean, spicy alcohol presence and a subtle hint of oxidation.
Taste. The initial impression is one of decadent dark malt and rich cocoa. Flavors of molasses and toasted bread support a moderate-high bitterness that is balanced by significant residual sweetness. The mid-palate reveals complex barrel character—bourbon, toasted marshmallow, and woody spice. The finish is long and warming with lingering notes of dark fruit and espresso.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a velvety, syrupy texture. Carbonation is low, enhancing the beer's weight and richness. Significant alcohol warmth is present and noticeable but smooth, lacking any harsh solvent qualities.
