Cycle Brewing Company CtC presents a masterclass in patient maturation, delivering an opulent English Barley Wine profile refined by three years in Blanton’s barrels. The sensory experience is defined by a dense, mahogany pour and a bouquet of rich toffee, vanilla, and oxidized notes reminiscent of vintage tawny port. On the palate, layers of decadent caramel and dark dried fruits—raisins and figs—are enveloped by charred oak and a smooth, bourbon-soaked warmth. This high-gravity ale showcases a velvety, chewy texture with low carbonation, allowing the intricate interplay of malt sweetness and barrel-derived tannins to linger through a luxurious, warming finish.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark brown with ruby highlights (SRM 18-22). Low, tan head with poor retention. High viscosity, displaying clear legs upon swirling. Brilliantly clear despite the depth of color.
Aroma. High intensity. Dominated by rich caramel and toffee malt, layered with intense bourbon barrel notes of vanilla, toasted coconut, and charred oak. Strong dark fruit esters of raisin and plum. Significant vinous, sherry-like oxidation from long aging. Hop aroma is negligible.
Taste. High malt sweetness featuring complex layers of treacle, biscuit, and dark caramel. Mid-palate reveals bourbon-soaked wood, spice, and dried fruit like dates and figs. Hop bitterness is low to moderate, primarily acting as a balance to the malt; hop flavor is earthy and minimal. Finish is long, sweet, and complex with a pleasant, integrated alcohol warmth.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy. Velvety, luscious texture. Low carbonation. Pronounced but smooth alcohol warmth that avoids being harsh or fusel.
