Sandpiper presents as a light-bodied but vibrantly hopped American IPA, tailored for sessionability at 3.6% ABV. The sensory profile is defined by a sophisticated hop blend of Jester, Olicana, UK Cascade, and Challenger, yielding bright notes of grapefruit, stone fruit, and a hint of spicy resin. A foundational grist of Thomas Fawcett’s Maris Otter and pale crystal malt provides a delicate biscuit sweetness and gold hue, while the inclusion of oat malt adds a subtle, smooth texture. The Cullercoats House yeast ensures a clean finish, allowing the nuanced hops to deliver a refreshing, bitter-forward experience that maintains the style's assertive character.
Appearance. Medium gold with brilliant clarity. Features a medium-sized, persistent white head with good lacing.
Aroma. Moderate to high hop intensity featuring citrus, grapefruit, and stone fruit characteristics. Low, clean, bready maltiness from the Maris Otter supports the hop presentation. Clean fermentation profile with very light fruity esters.
Taste. Firm hop bitterness leads into flavors of tropical fruit, citrus zest, and a touch of herbal spice. Low grainy and toasted malt flavors provide a brief support before a dry to medium-dry finish. The aftertaste is hoppy and bitter without being harsh.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture from the oat malt. Medium-high carbonation. No alcohol warmth.
