Appearance. SRM 40+; jet black and completely opaque. It pours with a thick, deep tan head of moderate retention that leaves oily legs on the glass, indicative of its high viscosity and alcohol content.
Aroma. High intensity; a powerful blend of bittersweet chocolate, roasted coffee beans, and black licorice. The Four Roses barrel influence is prominent, offering clear notes of vanilla, toasted coconut, and sweet bourbon mash. Subdued esters of raisins and figs emerge as it warms, alongside a clean, spirituous alcohol presence.
Taste. The initial impression is of massive, dark specialty malts featuring intense cocoa and charred grain. Mid-palate reveals layers of toffee and caramel sweetness, which are quickly met by a firm hop bitterness and wood tannins. Flavors of vanilla and oak persist through the finish. The balance is expertly tilted toward the rich malt and barrel character, concluding with a long, warming, and slightly vinous aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a luscious, velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A smooth, significant alcohol warmth is present but integrated, avoiding any harsh or solventy edges.
