This complex Oud Bruin reveals a sophisticated interplay of Belgian malt tradition and unique barrel-aging. Deep aromas of dark caramel, toffee, and treacle are layered with rich esters of plum and raisin, further complicated by a distinct wisp of Manuka and Peated smoked malt. The influence of the N.Z. Whisky barrel lends a soft oakiness and vanilla warmth, while its time spent alongside Flanders Red barrels introduces a delicate, puckering acidity. The palate is a balanced dance of sweet-and-sour, where chocolate and burnt sugar meet a subtle lactic tang, finishing with a lingering, sherry-like complexity and a smooth malt-forward depth.
Appearance. Dark reddish-brown with mahogany highlights; clear with a fine-textured, light tan head showing moderate retention.
Aroma. High intensity; rich malt notes of caramel, toffee, and dark chocolate; prominent dark fruit esters of fig and black cherry; subtle earthy Manuka and Peated smoke; low lactic sourness with a whisper of whisky-derived oak and vanilla; no hop aroma.
Taste. Initial malt sweetness featuring burnt sugar, treacle, and dark chocolate; transitions into a complex fruitiness of prune and raisin; medium-low sourness provides a refreshing counterpoint; background notes of peaty smoke and oak; very low hop bitterness; finishes with a sweet-and-sour, sherry-like character.
